A big thank you to Dr James Kah for joining us and sharing his expertise on 22nd November! Dr Kah shared insights from his courses focused on gerontechnology and disabilities, where students are empowered to design equipment that truly meets the needs of community clients.
The blueprints developed during these courses are made open source, ensuring a wider social impact and promoting accessibility for all
During their conversations, students gained new perspectives on the caregivers’ lives, understanding how they cope with their struggles and how caregiving can be a challenging task. An exhibition was held last week to showcase the mini albums at TriAngle. We are grateful to have the caregivers join us for the opening ceremony, sharing heartwarming moments with our students
Back on 1-4 November, our service-learning courses EURO4016, POLS2205, and POLS2206 jointly organised the inspiring 'Remembrance of War' event series. Students from the European Studies Programme explored the profound impact of war, delving into themes of remembrance, veterans' experiences and refugees' stories, all while championing the cause of peace

We are honoured to welcome Dr James Kah, Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Vice Dean of Outreach and Special Projects at the College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), as our esteemed speaker. Dr Kah is an expert in integrating service-learning with technology design for the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
This workshop will showcase the incorporation of experiential and community-based learning approach into formal curriculum, highlighting the potential for undergraduate courses to drive meaningful community impact through the development and application of assistive technologies.

Students from the course are offering orthopedic treatments for elderly patients suffering from chronic pain, utilizing techniques like Tui Na, moxibustion, acupuncture, and spinal manipulation
They’ve created engaging and interactive artwork for children, using technology to craft fun games and immersive experiences that stimulate the senses and convey important messages about dreams, career choices, mental health, and thinking outside the box etc
The creativity and imagination of the members at Hong Chi Association (HCA) are truly inspiring as HKBU students and members at HCA collaborated to create stunning paintings infused with unique elements such as a big family of sea creatures

During this tour, they delved into Taipei’s elderly services and care landscape by visiting various organizations such as the Chang Gung Health and Culture Village, and The New Taipei City Housing. They got to see innovative and best practices firsthand and gained knowledge about policies and the contributions of universities, innovative social programmes, and commercial projects from the private sector

Our students from PRAD3065/PRAO3065 Fundraising Events, Sponsorships, and Donor Management had the incredible opportunity to showcase their work to esteemed guests from Pok Oi Hospital, one of Hong Kong‘s largest NGOs!
FILM4075 students visited the Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College last Oct. 27, 2023, for a friendly interaction with students from ethnic minority backgrounds and to scan facial expressions. Data collected from interviews and scanning will be transformed into 3D facial animation videos which will portray the emotional experiences of fictional ethnic minority characters in studies and life.
Four teams of SIMMers have successfully completed the “Owner of the Week” event in November, showcasing their ideas on social innovation to the public. They have demonstrated initiatives such as helping new immigrants learn Cantonese and integrate into the local community, resulting in the successful recruitment of 18 community members.
They have also utilized art to raise public awareness of the history of Yau Ma Tei, employed art technology to express the blend of the old and the new in the community, and even transformed second-hand clothing into new objects, breathing new life into community with the hope that they can benefit individuals from different sectors of society in the future
CISL recently organised a full-day Service-Learning & Social Innovation Bootcamp at TriAngle. Participants were from 𝘾.𝘾.𝘾. 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙖𝙣 𝙒𝙖𝙞 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚, 𝘾.𝘾.𝘾. 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙖𝙣 𝙒𝙖𝙞 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚𝙋𝙤 𝙇𝙚𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙪𝙠 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 and 𝙆𝙬𝙪𝙣 𝙏𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙮𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚. The day was packed with educational and fun activities, providing the participants with the opportunity to exchange ideas on how to incorporate service-learning and social innovation into the secondary school curriculum.

”一代蔴地,“ by Lavina YUI, is an art installation in Yau Ma Tei that reminds people to Cherish what our generation has now. It showcases the fusion of present and traditional styles in the two bodies. At nighttime, the installation transforms into a sunset-like spectacle, prompting contemplation of the fleeting nature of time. Immerse yourself in Yau Ma Tei‘s vibrant society, create your own stories, and let the art speak volumes
The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to learn more about the history of Yau Ma Tei while encouraging them to express themselves creatively and develop new skills by painting historical buildings on cups, which they can bring home after joining the workshop

This initiative is led by a team of four students from Hong Kong Baptist University. By participating in free scenario-based Cantonese language learning courses, newcomers to Hong Kong can learn community-related vocabulary and apply it in their daily lives. The project aims to serve as a platform within the community, promoting Cantonese language and culture

Under the guidance of the silver-haired employees at Aroma, the students got hands-on experience in creating their own unique aromatherapy sachets. They also gained valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges faced by Johnny during his journey in social innovation. Overall, it was a truly enriching experience for them
